University of Maryland Hospital: Oncology

Educational Purpose: To provide the resident with experience in outpatient and inpatient care of GYN oncology patients.

This rotation is for Chief Residents.


PGY-4 - Chief Resident

Educational Objectives:

  1. Evaluation and management of patients with suspected gynecologic malignancy
  2. Evaluation and management of preinvasive carcinoma of the lower genital tract
  3. Appropriate use of diagnostic imaging in the evaluation and management of patients with gynecologic malignancies
  4. Pathologic diagnosis of gynecologic preinvasive disease as well as invasive disease
  5. Exposure to surgical, chemotherapeutic and radiation therapy as used to treat GYN malignancy
  6. Recognize appropriate indications for oncology consultation
  7. Develop techniques of effective communication with physicians and consultants
  8. Develop techniques of effective communication with patients and families faced with malignant disease
  9. Postoperative care and critical care of surgical patients
  10. Terminal care

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Assistance with gynecologic oncology surgical procedures
  • Postoperative care of GYN oncology patients, routine and emergent
  • Management of complications of surgery
  • Staging of oncology patients General knowledge of chemotherapy
