University of Maryland Hospital: Gynecology

Educational Purpose: For interns, this rotation provides experience with emergency room evaluation of gynecology patients and hospital inpatient consultations. In addition, the resident is introduced to preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of GYN surgical patients. For Chief Residents, the rotation provides experiences to develop surgical skills required to practice surgical gynecology as an independent practitioner.

The GYN team consists of a Chief Resident and an intern.

PGY-1 - Intern

Educational Objectives:

  1. Emergency Room consultations: Develop ability to perform history, physical examination and development of treatment plan for GYN ER visits
  2. Inpatient consultations: Develop ability to perform history, physical exam and treatment plan for common GYN problems
  3. Preoperative care: Perform pre-op evaluation of GYN surgical patients
  4. Operating room: Understand and perform preoperative prep, gain an understanding of how operating room works, develop ability to assist in common GYN surgical procedures

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Preoperative assessment
  • Postoperative care, recognition of abnormal states
  • GYN hospital consults (history & physical examination, assessment and plan)
  • Emergency room consults (history & physical exams, assessment, plan)
  • Daily progress notes
  • Evaluation of laboratory data in GYN patients

 

PGY-4 - Chief Resident

Educational Objectives:

  1. Emergency Room consultations: Develop ability to perform history, physical examination and development of treatment plan for common GYN emergencies
  2. In-hospital consultations: Develop ability to perform history, physical exam and treatment plan for common GYN problems
  3. Develop skills necessary for preoperative evaluation of patients
  4. Develop surgical skills necessary to perform major and minor gynecologic operations
  5. Develop skills necessary for postoperative evaluation of patients
  6. Develop ability to teach and supervise lower level residents and medical students

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Preop and postop care of gynecologic surgical patients
  • Abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic surgical procedures
  • ER and inpatient GYN consultations
  • Management and instruction of junior residents
