Jan Kriebs received her bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and her master's degree in nursing in maternal newborn/nurse midwifery from Yale University. She is currently an assistant professor in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves on the clinical faculty of the University of Maryland Nurse Midwifery Education Program. She has served as a nurse-midwife for Boston City Hospital and directed the midwifery service at Group Health Association. In addition, she is a fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and serves on the Fellowship Board of Governors. She is co-author of Varney's Midwifery, 4th edition in 2003.
